The Electricity and Water Authority (EWA) has successfully installed a 1.4 MW solar power facility at the Khalifa City water distribution station, marking a major milestone in Bahrain’s shift toward sustainable energy infrastructure.
According to a reports, the newly completed solar system features 2,032 solar panels installed across the rooftops of the station’s underground reservoirs. The system is designed to generate up to 1,400 KW of clean electricity, with surplus power being fed directly into Bahrain’s national grid. This enables the water station to operate entirely on renewable energy, further reducing its carbon footprint.
In addition to power generation, the project incorporates a self-cleaning mechanism for the panels to ensure optimal efficiency, along with advanced monitoring and control systems for real-time performance tracking and operational management.
This installation forms part of EWA’s broader strategy to retrofit its facilities with renewable energy systems. Kamal bin Ahmed Mohammed, President of EWA, stated that the Khalifa City station is now the eleventh EWA facility to transition to solar power, underscoring the authority’s dedication to sustainability and operational modernization.
“This project aligns with Bahrain’s national objectives to enhance clean energy production, reduce carbon emissions, and meet Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs),” said Kamal bin Ahmed. “It also contributes to the Kingdom’s Economic Vision 2030, which emphasizes energy diversification, efficiency improvements, and environmental stewardship.”
The initiative reinforces EWA’s role in driving Bahrain’s national energy transition. As the Kingdom works to meet its international climate commitments, such projects highlight the growing importance of renewable energy in its infrastructure and policy frameworks.
With more solar projects in the pipeline, EWA’s proactive approach is expected to play a critical role in shaping a greener, more energy-resilient Bahrain.
