In a significant move towards promoting electric and hybrid vehicles in India, the Ministry of Heavy Industries has granted approval for 7,432 electric vehicle (EV) charging stations. These stations will be established by three Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) as part of the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric Vehicles in India (FAME India) Scheme phase-II.

This information was given by the Minister of State for Heavy Industries Krishan Pal Gurjar, in a written reply in Rajya Sabha.

The FAME India Scheme, initiated in 2015, focuses on various aspects, including technological development, demand generation, pilot projects, and charging infrastructure. Building on the success of Phase-I, which supported approximately 2.8 lakh xEVs, the government allocated a budget of INR 10,000 crores for Phase-II, spanning five years from April 1, 2019.

Under Phase-II, the Ministry of Heavy Industries has already provided subsidies totaling INR 5,248 crores to electric vehicle manufacturers, resulting in the sale of 11,61,350 electric vehicles as of December 5, 2023. The scheme prioritizes the electrification of public and shared transportation, aiming to support 7,090 eBuses, 5 lakh e-3 Wheelers, 55,000 e-4 wheeler passenger cars, and 10 lakh e-2 wheelers.

Notably, the Ministry sanctioned INR 800 crores as capital subsidy to three oil marketing companies (OMCs) for the establishment of the 7,432 electric vehicle public charging stations. These stations, along with an additional 148 sanctioned for other entities, will be distributed across all states and Union Territories.

The move aligns with the government's commitment to fostering a cleaner and more sustainable future for transportation in the country.
