The European Union concluded negotiations on the European Performance of Building Directive, solidifying a transformative step towards energy efficiency and decarbonization within the EU building stock.
The directive, which outlines ambitious energy efficiency targets, particularly focusing on leveraging rooftop solar, received widespread acclaim.
Jan Osenberg, Policy Advisor at SolarPower Europe, expressed enthusiasm, stating, "EU negotiators reached a huge milestone to accelerate renewable deployment yesterday by inking a deal on the EU Solar Standard."
The standard mandates solar installations on all new public and commercial buildings by 2026, on all new residential buildings by 2029, and on non-residential buildings undergoing relevant renovations by 2027. Existing public buildings will follow a stepwise approach, ensuring solar installations by 2030.
The EU Solar Standard, presented as part of the EU Solar Rooftop Strategy to address the energy crisis, signifies a comprehensive commitment to solar energy deployment across all building segments.
Osenberg highlighted the measure's potential to efficiently integrate photovoltaic (PV) installations into building construction processes. "Roof constructions will soon always be combined with solar installations, reducing costs and allowing us to make use of the limited existing workforce as efficiently as possible," he added.
The directive's implementation now requires effective integration into construction practices and building requirements, along with facilitating access to private financing solutions.
