Etihad Rail Signs Solar Agreement with Masdar JV to Solarise Freight Terminal
Etihad Rail has partnered with Emerge, a joint venture between Masdar and EDF Group, to solarise its Ghuweifat freight terminal. The project will generate 85 percent of the terminal's energy from renewable sources, reducing CO2 emissions by over 8,500 tons, aligning with the UAE’s Net Zero by 2050 goals.

Etihad Rail, the developer and operator of the UAE National Rail Network, has signed a significant agreement with Emerge, a joint venture between Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company (Masdar) and EDF Group, to solarise the Ghuweifat freight terminal as part of its commitment to sustainable logistics.
This terminal, strategically located at the UAE-Saudi Arabia border, plays a crucial role in facilitating regional cross-border operations, and now, it is set to become a model for eco-friendly freight operations. The deal will see the installation of a 600 kWp ground-mounted solar PV system, paired with a 2.56 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS), which will eventually generate up to 85 percent of the terminal’s electricity. This initiative aligns with Etihad Rail’s vision to integrate renewable energy into its operations, drastically reducing the carbon footprint of its logistics operations. The project is expected to offset more than 8,500 tons of CO2 emissions over the contract period, making it a vital step toward Etihad Rail’s broader environmental goals.
Ahmed Al-Yafei, CEO of Etihad Rail Infrastructure, and Engineer Abdulaziz AlObaidli, Chairman of Emerge, signed the agreement in the presence of key officials including Shadi Malak, CEO of Etihad Rail, Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, CEO of Masdar, and Luc Koechlin, CEO of EDF Middle East.
Shadi Malak, CEO of Etihad Rail, expressed his enthusiasm for the project, saying, "This initiative is a cornerstone of Etihad Rail's vision to integrate sustainability into every aspect of our operations. By collaborating with Emerge and transitioning to solar power, we are not only reducing our environmental impact but also building greener, more resilient supply chains, in line with our nation’s ambitions for a sustainable future."
Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, CEO of Masdar, emphasised the significance of the collaboration, stating, "The partnership with Etihad Rail represents a pivotal step toward cleaner and more sustainable infrastructure development in the region. By leveraging the combined expertise of Masdar and EDF Group, we are supporting Etihad Rail and others in reducing their environmental impact, helping the UAE progress towards its Net Zero by 2050 goal."
Luc Koechlin, CEO of EDF Group Middle East, further noted, "EDF Group is proud to support Etihad Rail in this innovative initiative, which exemplifies our shared commitment to a sustainable energy future. Through our expertise in low-carbon solutions, we are contributing to the UAE’s energy transition and helping to build a net-zero Middle East."
This solar project is part of Etihad Rail’s broader vision of integrating sustainable energy solutions into its infrastructure, which will play a key role in supporting the UAE's wider environmental and climate goals.
