Energy Vault announced it has entered into an agreement with the State Electricity Commission (SEC), the Victorian Government’s renewable energy company, to deliver and integrate a 100 MW/200 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) at the SEC Horsham Renewable Energy Park in Victoria.
This hybrid solar and BESS project is an important step in supporting Victoria’s transition to renewable, reliable and affordable energy.
SEC Horsham Renewable Energy Park is one of the first 100 percent publicly owned utility-scale renewable energy projects in Australia. The project includes more than 212,000 solar photovoltaic panels, generating 119 megawatts of solar power and up to 242,000 megawatt-hours of electricity per year. Energy Vault's integrated BESS with grid-forming capabilities will provide stable, dispatchable power to meet peak demand with up to two hours of energy storage.
SEC’s USD 370 million investment will provide enough renewable energy to power approximately 51,000 homes, create approximately 246 jobs during construction and deliver economic benefits to the Horsham region. Early construction work on the SEC Horsham Renewable Energy Park began this week and is expected to be fully operational later in 2027.
The BESS system will be built using Energy Vault's proprietary X-VAULT™ integration platform and use the company's UL9540 certified proprietary B-VAULT™ product and VaultOS™ energy management system to control, manage and optimize the operation of the hybrid BESS. Energy Vault's innovative system architecture gives customers the freedom to choose battery and inverter suppliers, while the unique AC-coupled and DC-coupled configurations provide the out-of-the-box flexibility needed for any project.
“We are excited to further expand our energy storage footprint in the dynamic and fast-growing Australian market and to be working with SEC on this innovative hybrid project structure,” said Robert Piconi, Chairman and CEO of Energy Vault. “As our first collaboration with a government, this publicly owned project is highly aligned with our mission to accelerate the clean energy transition through sustainable and efficient energy storage solutions and will play a critical role in securing the supply of renewable energy.”
SEC CEO Chris Miller said, “We look forward to working with Energy Vault to deliver and integrate the battery energy storage system at SEC’s Horsham Renewable Energy Park. This project highlights SEC’s ongoing efforts to drive Victoria’s transition to renewable energy.”
This announcement marks a key step forward in Energy Vault’s growing commercial footprint in the Australian market, following a series of agreements, including with Enervest and ACEN Australia, for BESS deployments. Energy Vault’s B-VAULT portfolio now totals more than 2 GWh of projects deployed or under development.
