In a groundbreaking achievement for sustainable architecture, Energy Partners, in collaboration with Fairvest Limited, has completed the Metalbox skyscraper in Auckland Park, Johannesburg. Standing 80 metrers tall, the Metalbox is South Africa's first solar facade skyscraper, equipped with innovative building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV) capable of generating up to 300 MWh annually.

Commenting on the project, Manie de Waal, CEO of Energy Partners, called the project a historic milestone for South Africa’s green energy sector. He said, "We’ve seen similar projects succeed worldwide, but it required both a visionary client and a committed team to set a new benchmark for South Africa."

The Metalbox skyscraper features two distinct solar systems. Monocrystalline panels on the building’s sides enhance energy efficiency and aesthetic appeal, while carport-type panels on the roof optimise sunlight exposure and provide weatherproofing. "This technology transforms conventional building parts into solar systems, enhancing functionality and aesthetics," explained Charl du Plessis, General Manager of Energy Partners.

As per the firm, ensuring the safety of the installation team, who worked from lowered platforms, was a top priority. Also, achieving adequate torque on the clamps for environmental resilience was also critical, given the solar panels cover a total area of 1,259m², making it South Africa’s largest custom-built commercial installation.

Riaz Kader, COO of Fairvest Limited, emphasised the strategic importance of the project. "This solar installation marks our innovative, solutions-driven approach towards renewable energy. We are committed to investing in sustainable energy and water infrastructure to de-risk our portfolio while lowering the cost of electricity for our company and tenants," Kader said.

However, despite the challenges, the Metalbox project is seen as a monumental leap forward. "The Metalbox project exemplifies Energy Partners' ethos—leveraging cutting-edge technology to create cleaner energy solutions," de Waal stated.

The Metalbox skyscraper not only represents a significant achievement in sustainable architecture but also sets a precedent for future green energy projects in South Africa.
