The Union Minister for Power and New & Renewable Energy, R.K. Singh, in a written reply to a question, in Lok Sabha informed about the commissioning of nine hydroelectric projects in Northeast India with a collective capacity of 2,412 MW since 2014-15.
The minister highlighted key policy measures implemented to promote hydro power, including the declaration of Large Hydro Power (> 25 MW projects) as a renewable energy source.
Additional measures like Hydro Purchase Obligation, tariff rationalization, and budgetary support for flood moderation/storage hydroelectric projects have contributed to fostering the hydro power sector's growth.
The commissioned hydroelectric projects in the North Eastern Region, including states like Sikkim, Mizoram, Meghalaya, and Arunachal Pradesh, underscore the commitment to sustainable and reliable power sources. Notable projects include Teesta-III (Sikkim), Turial (Mizoram), Pare (Arunachal Pradesh), and Kameng (Arunachal Pradesh).
Looking forward, the region anticipates further capacity additions with eight hydroelectric projects under construction, totaling 6,037 MW. These ongoing projects include the Subansiri Lower project in Arunachal Pradesh, Dibang Multipurpose Project, and Teesta St. VI in Sikkim, among others.
Furthermore, Singh emphasized the government's concurrence to 17 hydroelectric schemes, totaling 14,589 MW, in the North Eastern Region, including Sikkim. These projects, approved by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA), aim to fortify the region's energy security and contribute to the national power grid.
