In a significant step towards enhancing energy efficiency and sustainability, Emirates has partnered with Etihad Clean Energy Development to roll out a large-scale solar energy project at the Emirates Engineering Centre in Dubai.
The announcement was made during the World Green Economy Summit 2024, with the signing ceremony attended by Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman of the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy and Chairman of Emirates Airline and Group, and Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Vice Chairman of the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy and CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA).
The project involves the design, engineering, procurement, construction, testing, and commissioning of solar photovoltaic (PV) systems, along with 20 years of operation and maintenance services. A total of 39,960 solar panels will be installed, covering 37 percent of the Emirates Engineering Centre's annual energy needs and reducing CO2 emissions by over 13,000 tonnes annually. The total capacity of the solar installation is 23,177 kWp, generating an estimated 34.3 million kWh of energy per year.
Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum emphasised Emirates' commitment to renewable energy, saying, "By integrating solar energy into the Emirates Engineering Centre, we are significantly reducing our carbon footprint while advancing the UAE’s clean energy goals. This project is a key milestone in our sustainability journey and expands solar installations across our facilities."
Saeed Al Tayer, representing Etihad Clean Energy Development, highlighted the partnership's importance, stating, "This project showcases our expertise in energy efficiency solutions. Our collaboration with Emirates will not only ensure the long-term operational efficiency of the solar systems but also drive substantial reductions in carbon emissions and energy costs. This partnership reinforces the UAE’s vision for a sustainable future and sets a precedent for renewable energy adoption within the aviation sector."
The 20-year agreement for operation and maintenance ensures long-term environmental benefits, helping Emirates meet its sustainability targets. This project is part of broader efforts to support the UAE's low-carbon future by reducing reliance on non-renewable energy sources. Other Emirates-owned facilities in Dubai, including the Emirates Flight Catering facility and The Sevens Stadium, also feature solar panel installations, with the latter hosting the region’s largest solar carport at a sports venue.
