Energy Efficiency Services Ltd. (EESL), a joint venture company of Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) of Ministry of Power, has installed more than 1.28 crore LED street lights across 29 States/UTs under Street Light National Programme (SLNP), till date. The information was given by the Union Minister for Power and Renewable Energy R.K. Singh in the Lok Sabha recently.

Under SLNP, EESL had set an objective of converting around 1.34 crore existing conventional street lights across all urban local bodies or gram panchayats of the country with energy efficient LED street lights in five years. Apparently, EESL enters into agreement with urban local bodies and gram panchayats directly or through the concerned state/UT governments before taking up the replacement of street lights.

SLNP was launched by the prime minister on January 5, 2015. It is being implemented by (EESL), to replace conventional street lights with smart and energy efficient LED street lights across the country. However, being a voluntary program, no specific targets have been set for SLNP.

Founded in 2009, EESL has been able to save India over 47 billion kWh energy annually while reducing 36.5 million tonnes of carbon emission.
