Eaton announced its participation in a pan-European research and innovation project to develop a comprehensive computing infrastructure for energy storage systems.
The InterSTORE (Interoperable open source tools to enable hybridization, utilization and monetization of storage flexibility) project, which launched on 1 January and is expected to run for three years, is supported by the program Research and Innovation Horizon Europe of the European Union.
Eaton joins 11 other members of the project consortium, which is coordinated by the Technical University of Aachen and includes academic partners as well as other companies, industry societies and standardization organizations.
The mass adoption of energy storage is vital to enable the energy transition in Europe, and this requires both standardization and interoperability. To maximize benefits for operators, suppliers, distributors and end users, energy storage equipment and systems must be able to communicate seamlessly, regardless of age or manufacturer.
"The sun is not always shining and the wind is not always blowing, so widespread energy storage is vital for a successful transition of Europe towards renewable energy and full electrification," says Dominik Laska, Director of the European Innovation Center for Eaton. “However, current solutions are very diverse and often incompatible. To enable large-scale adoption, we need a unified approach to energy storage management. That's why I'm glad we're joining forces with our expert partners at InterSTORE to help develop an innovative, stand-alone solution that can support third-party software or hardware and thus have a significant effect in the real world.”
