Delhi has unveiled 500 new electric low-floor buses, marking the largest-ever single induction of electric buses globally. Lieutenant Governor V.K. Saxena and Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal inaugurate this monumental addition, emphasizing the city's commitment to eco-friendly transit.
Manufactured by Tata Motors, these buses are part of a larger order of 1,500 low-floor, air-conditioned electric buses, reinforcing Delhi's dedication to expanding its green fleet.
Delhi Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot expresses enthusiasm, noting that the addition of these 500 electric buses brings Delhi's total electric bus count to 1,300, the highest in any Indian city.
Since January 2022, Delhi's existing fleet of 800 electric buses has covered over 42 million kilometers, resulting in a substantial reduction of 34,000 tonnes of CO2. Looking ahead, Delhi aims to operate a total of 10,480 buses by 2025, with electric vehicles constituting 80 percent of the fleet, contributing to an annual reduction of approximately 4.67 lakh tonnes of carbon emissions.
The new electric buses not only prioritize environmental sustainability but also offer modern amenities, including disability-friendly features, air-conditioning, and advanced safety measures such as GPS, CCTVs, and panic buttons. With zero smoke and noise pollution, these buses provide a comfortable and quiet commute for passengers.
