Delhi Government Launches Solar Portal to Accelerate RE Adoption

Delhi’s Solar Portal simplifies rooftop solar installations, offering subsidies, net metering, and incentives. Aimed at achieving 750 MW solar capacity by 2027, the initiative helps residents become prosumers, generating clean energy and saving on electricity bills.

In a major push for renewable energy, Delhi Chief Minister Atishi launched the Delhi Solar Portal to streamline rooftop solar adoption for residents and businesses.

This initiative is part of the broader Delhi Solar Energy Policy. The portal targets a cumulative rooftop solar capacity of 750 MW by 2027, transitioning at least 25 percent of the city’s electricity consumption to solar energy.

The portal can be accessed at  solar.delhi.gov.in. The portal offers a one-stop solution for installing solar panels, applying for net metering, and availing subsidies and generation-based incentives (GBI). "This portal simplifies the solar adoption process. Consumers can access all relevant information, including applying for net metering, without needing to visit power distribution companies," said CM Atishi during the launch.

A key feature of the portal is its solar calculator, enabling users to input rooftop dimensions and electricity consumption to estimate potential energy generation, financial savings, and payback periods. A vendor directory also ensures reliable service providers for installations.

The Delhi Solar Policy includes incentives such as a INR 2,000 per kW capital subsidy (capped at INR 10,000) and a GBI of INR 3 per kWh for residential users generating surplus energy. Group housing societies and RWAs can benefit from a “community solar” model, earning INR 2 per unit of electricity generated collectively.

Atishi emphasised the initiative’s role in making Delhi a clean-energy leader, highlighting its dual financial and environmental benefits, saying, "This ensures that even those without adequate rooftop space can benefit by participating in community solar projects."

“This initiative ensures zero electricity bills for residents with rooftop solar panels and allows them to earn through surplus energy generation,” Atishi added.

The Delhi government has mandated rooftop solar installations for all government buildings, schools, and hospitals, with tenders already underway. With the city’s current solar capacity at 300 MW, the portal aims to accelerate the adoption process and empower citizens to become prosumers (consumers who generate electricity).

To use the Delhi Solar Portal, consumer has to register on the website and apply for net metering, GBI, and a capital subsidy. The portal makes the process easy by handling approvals with the concerned departments. After getting approval, consumer can choose from listed vendors to install solar panels. Once installed, the GBI will be adjusted in consumer's electricity bill, and any extra amount will be credited to consumer's  bank account within seven days of the billing cycle. The one-time subsidy, up to INR 10,000, will be applied to consumer's first electricity bill after the solar system is set up.

The portal is expected to contribute significantly to the city’s renewable energy goals, aligning with national ambitions for a greener future.
