The Delhi government has unveiled an ambitious budget for the financial year 2025-26, placing a strong emphasis on clean energy, sustainability, and environmental resilience.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, while presenting the budget, highlighted several key initiatives aimed at making Delhi a greener and more energy-efficient city. A major highlight of this budget is the promotion of solar power among households through the PM Surya Ghar: Free Electricity Scheme.
This initiative, launched in collaboration with the Central Government, aims to encourage residential solar rooftop installations by offering subsidies of up to INR 78,000. Additionally, the state government has allocated INR 50 crore as a top-up incentive to further support the installation of solar panels on 2.3 lakh homes over the next three years. These measures are designed to significantly lower electricity costs for citizens while contributing to a reduction in carbon emissions.
To modernise Delhi’s power infrastructure and improve efficiency, the budget earmarks INR 100 crore for the underground installation of high-tension (HT) and low-tension (LT) transmission lines. This strategic move is expected to enhance the city's aesthetics, ensure greater safety, and reduce technical power losses.
Further, by focusing on expanding renewable energy generation, the Delhi government aims to secure a reliable 24/7 electricity supply while reducing its dependence on fossil fuels. This transition aligns with the broader goal of making Delhi a leader in sustainable urban development and energy conservation.
The budget also prioritises environmental protection, particularly tackling air pollution, which remains one of Delhi’s most pressing challenges. In a comprehensive effort to combat pollution, the government has allocated INR 506 crore for various environmental initiatives.
Another key focus of the budget is waste management, a critical issue for a rapidly growing metropolis like Delhi. The government plans to implement advanced scientific waste management techniques to reduce dependence on landfills and promote recycling. By leveraging modern technology and stricter enforcement of waste disposal regulations, the government aims to create a cleaner and more sustainable urban environment. These efforts align with Delhi’s broader vision of a circular economy, where waste is minimised, and resources are reused efficiently.
With these initiatives, the Delhi government has laid out a comprehensive roadmap to transform the capital into a model city for renewable energy adoption and sustainable urban living. The emphasis on solar power, modernised power infrastructure, and effective environmental management is expected to make Delhi healthier, cleaner, and more energy-efficient.
