The United Kingdom, Brazil, and the United Arab Emirates have set high-ambition 2035 Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) targets, aligning with the urgent global call for deep, rapid, and sustained greenhouse gas reductions.

As per the joint statement released, these countries aim to align their emissions trajectories with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) recommendations, working towards limiting global warming to 1.5°C.

Meanwhile, GZERO nations—Bhutan, Madagascar, Panama, and Suriname—are already leading the way by achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions, showcasing that even countries with limited resources can make significant strides toward climate goals. The global community is now being urged to follow their example, accelerating efforts to achieve net zero emissions.

"Canada, Chile, the European Union, Georgia, Mexico, Norway, and Switzerland are also preparing to submit next NDCs that will include absolute, economy-wide emissions reductions covering all sectors and greenhouse gases. These countries commit to a linear or steeper emissions reduction trajectory, aiming for net-zero targets by mid-century," said the statement.

The statement further emphasised the global urgency for bold climate action, with the leaders of Bhutan, Madagascar, Panama, and Suriname stating, "GZERO Nations have set the standard for true climate leadership. We call on the world to rise to the occasion, match our ambition, and embrace transformational changes to keep 1.5°C within reach."

In support of these commitments, Canada’s Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Steven Guilbeault, echoed the sentiment, "The Paris Agreement is working, and keeping 1.5°C within reach is both an environmental imperative and an economic opportunity. Canada is committed to securing an ambitious and hopeful outcome at COP29."

Mexico's Minister Secretary of Environment and Natural Resources, Alicia Bárcena, also reaffirmed the country's dedication to bold climate action, emphasising that the next round of NDCs is an unparalleled opportunity to transform the development model for both people and the planet.

The growing collective ambition highlights the critical role of major emitters in keeping the world on a 1.5°C pathway, with leaders across the globe committed to delivering on the goals of the Paris Agreement.
