COP28 Calls for Tripling Global Renewable Capacity by 2030 to Curb Warming

COP28, hosted by the United Arab Emirates, along with the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and the Global Renewables Alliance, has jointly stated that renewable energy capacity should exceed 11,000 GW by 2030.

The upcoming COP28 climate summit, along with the endorsement of two leading renewable energy entities, has issued an urgent plea to governments to triple global renewable energy capacity by 2030 to prevent the Earth from surpassing the critical 1.5 degrees Celsius threshold in global warming.

COP28, hosted by the United Arab Emirates, along with the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and the Global Renewables Alliance, has jointly stated that renewable energy capacity should exceed 11,000 GW by 2030.

Efforts to forge an agreement on this capacity increase will be a focal point during the global climate negotiations scheduled for late November in Dubai.

These negotiations will center on addressing the gaps in implementing the 2015 Paris Agreement, which is aimed at restricting global warming to a 1.5°C limit.

While many major economies, including China, the United States, and India, have already expressed support for this goal, achieving a consensus at COP28 remains a formidable challenge. European nations and climate-vulnerable countries emphasize that simply agreeing to boost clean energy is not sufficient; a commitment to phasing out CO2-emitting fossil fuels must be part of the deal. This condition faces resistance from fossil fuel-reliant economies like Saudi Arabia and Russia.

European Union climate policy chief Wopke Hoekstra has emphasized that the COP28 must include both renewable energy goals and a commitment to phase out fossil fuels to be deemed successful.

Notably, the talks at COP28 will be presided over by Sultan al-Jaber, CEO of the state oil giant ADNOC, a choice that has drawn criticism due to his dual role as the UAE's climate envoy.

The report also advocates for doubling energy efficiency, setting specific time-bound targets, implementing robust regulatory frameworks, providing financial incentives, and launching awareness campaigns.

These initiatives underscore the critical importance of aligning climate action with the expansion of renewable energy to avert the severe consequences of global warming.
