The Ministry of Coal in alignment with the Prime Minister's 'Panchamrit' pledge at COP-26 is spearheading a renewable energy revolution to combat climate change and propel India towards net-zero carbon emissions by 2070.

With a focused commitment on strengthening renewable energy capacity, the Ministry has revealed a groundbreaking net-zero electricity consumption strategy for Coal/Lignite Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs). Recognizing renewables as key to environmental sustainability, the Ministry is actively championing rooftop and ground-mounted solar projects across mining facilities.

Additionally, plans are underway to develop solar parks within reclaimed mining areas and other suitable lands, harnessing underutilized resources for sustainable energy generation. This initiative aligns seamlessly with the government's revised Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) target, aiming for 50 percent cumulative electric power from non-fossil fuel-based resources by 2030.

In a bid to minimize mining's carbon footprint, the Ministry has mandated coal companies to accelerate solar energy adoption. This includes outfitting government buildings with rooftop solar panels and establishing solar projects in de-coaled areas, leveraging solar potential in previously utilized spaces.

Currently, leading coal companies, including Coal India Limited (CIL), NLC India Limited (NLCIL), and SCCL, boast a combined solar capacity of approximately 1700 MW, complemented by 51 MW from wind mills. Looking ahead, the coal sector aims to escalate renewable energy capacity to surpass 9 GW by 2030, signaling a resolute commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship.

The 'Net Zero' electricity consumption plan holds immense promise, facilitating a substantial reduction in carbon emissions and fostering environmental preservation. Moreover, it drives technological innovation and economic growth, promising job creation and positioning India at the forefront of the renewable energy revolution.
