BalticSeaH2 is building the first major cross-border hydrogen valley in Europe. The aim is to create an integrated hydrogen economy around the Baltic Sea to enable energy self-sufficiency and minimize the carbon emissions of the various industries. 40 partners from nine countries in the Baltic Sea region are involved in the project.

The merging of local areas into a broader valley supports the creation of an integrated, inter-regional hydrogen economy of a magnitude unprecedented in Europe.

The area between Finland and Estonia is an optimal location for a cross-border hydrogen market. The necessary infrastructure – natural gas pipelines, power grids and active shipping traffic – already exist in the Gulf of Finland.

The project will help reduce carbon emissions from existing shipping. In addition, Gasgrid Finland is already preparing a hydrogen infrastructure: Nordic-Baltic Hydrogen Corridor, Baltic Sea Hydrogen Collector and Nordic Hydrogen Route enable strong growth of hydrogen economy and hydrogen markets in the Baltic Sea region.

The BalticSeaH2 projects allow for 25 demonstration and investment cases to showcase the different sectors of the hydrogen economy, amounting to over 4,000 million euros in total investments.

The hydrogen production potential will reach 100,000 tons of hydrogen per year by the end of the project. The hydrogen and its derivatives can be used or sold by various industries brought together by the project.
