Chandigarh to Set Up 4 MW Floating Solar Plant at Sector 39

Chandigarh is set to boost its renewable energy footprint with a 4 MW floating solar power plant at Sector 39. Costing around INR 24 crore, the project will be implemented by Chandigarh Renewable Energy and Science & Technology Promotion Society (CREST) and is scheduled to be completed in FY 2025-26.

The Chandigarh administration is planning to set up a 4 MW floating solar power plant at Sector 39 in Chandigarh. The project which will be the largest floating solar plant in North India, will be implemented by CREST (Chandigarh Renewable Energy and Science & Technology Promotion Society).

It’s estimated to cost around INR 24 crore and is expected to be completed in this financial year. The project is part of the UT’s overall plan to develop 8 MWp of solar projects in FY26.

Currently, the city operates three floating solar plants with a combined capacity of 5 MWp, and a new 3 MWp plant is ready for energisation.

As of February 2024, Chandigarh has a total installed solar capacity of 89.689 MWp across 10,234 government and private buildings. The UT leads the country in solarising all its government buildings—residential and official—with rooftop systems, contributing 52.852 kWp.

Floating solar installations not only produce clean energy but also conserve water by reducing evaporation while also maximising space efficiency. Unlike traditional land-based solar farms, floating installations eliminate the need for large land areas, making them well-suited for space-constrained urban settings like Chandigarh. Initiatives like this highlight how cities can integrate renewable energy solutions to support urban development while promoting environmental sustainability.

Looking ahead, the administration is exploring more opportunities for solar expansion, including installations in large parks and along the city’s 200 km of cycle tracks.
