In a bid to boost, solar power generation in the city, the RESCO model of building, operate, and transfer for houses- will be implemented all over Chandigarh.

Joint Electricity Regulatory Commission (JERC) has given its consent for the installation of rooftop solar power plants on residential buildings free of cost which will be a big move for the generation of renewable energy.

Chandigarh, the city is going to be the first in the country, where the private organization will be onboard for installing rooftop solar plants on private residential buildings free of cost.

The private concerns will be liable for procuring, developing, installing, funding, and operating the rooftop solar power plant for a limited build-operate-transfer (BOT) period, which will be determined in the course of the supplying stage.

As per the statement of the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), the 'Rooftop Solar Programme' programhas been extended till 31.03.2026.CREST will share a detailed status report after the completion of three years of the project given the commission's direction.

Within this project, the house owners will have to allocate space on the rooftop, in return, they will get power incurring the cost of INR 3.23 per unit during the BOT period. Currently, domestic consumers are paying INR 2.75 per unit for 0-151 units, INR 4.25 per unit for 151-400 units, and INR 4.65 per unit for consuming over 400 units.

Also, Renewable Energy Service Company (RESCO)will markas signatoryin the agreement with the Electricity Department, the beneficiary, and Chandigarh Renewable Energy Science and Technology Promotion Society (CREST) for the gross sale of solar power produced from the GCRT system. The power produced will be first supplied and consumed by the consumer whereas the rest stock will be supplied to the power grid. It will be accessible for capacities from 5 kW to 10 kW for domestic consumers.

CREST, the executing agency for renewable energy projects of the Department of Science and Technology, UT, had filed a petition before the JERC, regarding the approval for the grid-connected rooftop (GCRT) power projects for domestic consumers by a third party under the build, operate and transfer model of RESCO.
