The central government has approved a fund of INR 81 crore for Tripura to construct 274 solar microgrids in remote areas, particularly tribal hamlets, aiming to provide electricity to over 9,000 homes.

The project, under the Ministry of Development of Northeast Region (DoNER), targets regions where conventional electricity appears non-profitable due to low population density.

The Department of Energy and Natural Resources has granted the funds to Tripura for this initiative, which aims to bring electricity to tribal and non-tribal habitations where power has not yet reached.

Each solar microgrid, ranging from 2 KW to 25 KW depending on population, will contribute to the state's goal of generating 500 MW of solar electricity by 2030.

With the potential to tap into 2,000 MW of solar power, Tripura aims to utilize solar energy to address remote areas' energy needs and reduce reliance on conventional sources. The project is expected to commence within the current fiscal year, marking a significant step toward sustainable energy solutions in the region.
