The central government has proposed measures to reduce dependence on diesel-based generation of energy and increase the share of renewable energy in Lakshadweep during a review of the power sector by Union Minister of Power Manohar Lal.
The Minister mentioned that the cost of generation of electricity needs to be reduced over a period of time. In this regard, he emphasised the need for reducing dependence on diesel-based generation by increasing the share of renewable sources of power generation like solar and wind or a combination of both and combining that with a battery energy storage system so as to have a stable grid.
Lal also mentioned to explore the possibility of alternate sources of energy generation. Further, he emphasised on increasing the use of electric vehicles (EV) and to have solar-based EV charging stations to energise. He mentioned that it may be explored if a similar pilot could be done for boats which are currently diesel-run.
The Minister also advised the UT to work towards greening a few islands of Lakshadweep like Agatti-Bangaram, Minicoy and Kadmat to start with. In this regard, the necessary support would be provided by the Ministry, he said.
The meeting was attended by Praful Patel, Administrator, UT of Lakshadweep and senior officials from the UT administration, officials from the central government and officials from Power Finance Corporation (PFC).
During the meeting, the Administrator requested for approval of projects for interconnecting the islands through sub-marine cable for which a detailed proposal would be submitted in due course. He highlighted the necessity of the project for a quality supply of power across the island. He also requested for consideration of works related to the modernisation of transmission and distribution systems in the UT under RDSS.
The review by the Power Minister covered the performance of the electricity department, demand-supply balance of power, performance under the flagship scheme of PM Surya Ghar Yojana and other ongoing renewable projects including the ground-mounted solar project and the proposed floating solar power plant.
