The Central government finally cleared pending subsidy dues, accounting for INR 3.25 crore, for residents who had installed rooftop solar power plants in 2019.

An official of the Chandigarh Renewable Energy and Science and Technology Promotion Society (CREST), the nodal agency for the installation of solar photovoltaic (SPV) power plants on rooftops, said the ministry had cleared a subsidy amount worth INR 3.25 crore. He said the amount would be disbursed next month to 421 house owners.

According to the rules, the subsidy amount for people establishing solar power plants in their houses was to be credited into the account of residents within a month after them having paid the total cost of such plants.

Chandigarh, now, is the first among all states/UTs of the country to have introduced the RESCO model.  Under the Renewable Energy Services Company (RESCO) model, a third party currently, builds, operates, and transfers solar power plant on consumer’s premises, despite that bearing the installation and commissioning costs of the system.

This scheme included zero investment, a rate of INR 3.29 per unit and free-of-cost operation and maintenance for 15 years up to the time of transfer of the plant to the beneficiary.

As the system’s anticipated life is nearer to 25 years, the consumer will get free solar power for around 10 years.

Under the new model, the house owner will have to provide nearly 500 sq ft of space for the installation of a 5kWp solar plant.

The MNRE had increased the city’s solar power generation objective from 69 MW to be attained by 2022 to 75 MW to be fulfilled by August 15, 2023. So far, the UT has attained a production of about 55 MW.
