In a collaborative effort to fortify the power sector against cyber threats, the Central Electricity Authority (CEA), Ministry of Power, Government of India, organized a workshop on Cyber Security for Distribution Utilities in the Power Sector.
Conducted in association with REC Limited and the Expert Group on Smart Metering (EGSM), the event convened industry leaders, renowned experts, and cybersecurity enthusiasts to discuss and address the evolving challenges in cybersecurity.
The workshop, held in Gurugram, featured discussions on critical topics such as Cybersecurity Preparedness, Threat Landscape and Challenges in Incidence Response, Practice Measures for identified Critical Information Infrastructure (CII) in the Distribution Sector, Cyber Security requirements for Cloud Security, and Cyber Security Testing of Firewall and Routers.
A key focus of the event was the 2021 Guidelines for Cyber Security in the Power Sector issued by the CEA. These guidelines, mandatory for compliance by all responsible entities, including transmission utilities, load dispatch centers, generation utilities, distribution utilities, and others, underscored the importance of proactive action to build resilience against cyber threats.
Highlighting the malicious intent behind cyber intrusion attempts in the Power Sector, the workshop emphasized that compromises could lead to maloperations, equipment damages, or even cascading grid brownouts/blackouts. All stakeholders, including responsible entities, service providers, equipment suppliers, vendors, and consultants in the Power Sector, were urged to act promptly on threat intelligence and advisories for continuous improvement in their cybersecurity posture.
The workshop served as a valuable platform for knowledge exchange, sharing best practices, and fostering collective resilience against cyberattacks in the Indian power sector.
