Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Union Cabinet has approved the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between India and Bhutan, aiming to foster collaboration in the realm of energy efficiency and conservation.

The MoU inked between the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), Ministry of Power, Government of India, and the Department of Energy, Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources, Royal Government of Bhutan, signifies a commitment to extending cooperation in enhancing energy efficiency measures.

Under this agreement, India will lend its expertise to Bhutan in bolstering energy efficiency in the household sector, primarily through the promotion of the star labeling program developed by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency. Additionally, India will facilitate the formulation of building codes tailored to Bhutan's climate conditions, drawing from its own experience in this regard.

A key component of the MoU involves the institutionalization of training programs for energy auditors, aimed at creating a pool of energy professionals within Bhutan. Furthermore, the training of retailers will facilitate the dissemination of information regarding energy-efficient products and the potential savings associated with star-rated appliances.

Recognizing the significance of energy-intensive appliances in driving up consumption levels, both at households and commercial establishments, the MoU underscores the importance of consumer preference for high-efficiency appliances. With the Bureau of Energy Efficiency spearheading India's star labeling program, which currently covers 37 appliances used in daily life, the stage is set for impactful collaboration between the two nations.

Prepared by the Ministry of Power in consultation with the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) and the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), the MoU facilitates the exchange of information, data, and technical expertise related to energy efficiency and conservation between India and Bhutan.

By leveraging this partnership, Bhutan aims to ensure the availability of energy-efficient products in its market, while also analyzing energy efficiency policies and fostering cooperation in research and technology deployment in the field of energy efficiency.
