Chinese automaker BYD has launched its best-selling low-cost electric vehicle (EV), the 'Dolphin Surf' car, its tenth model on offer in Europe, in Berlin, as sales across the region pick up speed after a strategic revamp. The European name for Seagull is Dolphin Surf, and it has several changes compared with the Chinese version.
The small car is 3.99 m long, 1.72 m wide and 1.59 m high. That is 21 cm longer than the Dolphin Mini. A look at the side view suggests that it is not the wheelbase, which measures 2.5 m and the amount of space that has increased. The exact dimensions are as follows: Seagull: 3780/1715/1540 mm, wheelbase 2500 mm and Dolphin Surf: 3990/1720/1590 mm, wheelbase 2500 mm.
BYD offers three versions of the Dolphin Surf: Active, Boost and Comfort. Active and Boost have a 65 kW drive motor that accelerates the Surf to 100 km/h in 11.1 and 12.1 seconds, respectively. The Comfort has 85 kW, which shortens the sprint to 9.1 seconds. The top speed is a standard 150 km/h. The drive is installed at the front and also transmits its power to the front wheels.
The all-electric hatchback is a five-seater and will have three options in Europe: Active, Boost and Comfort. All of them are FWD, sit on e-platform 3.0, and have a top speed of 150 km/h. The entry-level version is called Active and starts at EUR 19,990. It is equipped with a 30 kWh LFP blade battery good for 220 km WLTP and a 65 kW motor. The two higher trims of the Dolphin Surf have the same 43.2 kWh battery, good for about 310 to 322 km WLTP range, but differ in e-motor. The mid-level has 65 kW (the same as the Active trim), and the top trim has a 115 kW motor. In China, the maximum motor power of a Seagull is 55 kW.
All the models have automatic air conditioning, have adaptive cruise control, electrically adjustable exterior mirrors, parking sensors and a reversing camera. The mid-range Boost trim level also includes a rain sensor and electrically adjustable seats. The top-of-the-range Comfort model adds heated front seats, LED headlights and a 360-degree camera.
The Dolphin Surf will sell in Germany, the UK, Belgium and other European markets. It will compete with Renault 58, VW ID.3, or Dacia Spring. In Germany, BYD sold 2,791 cars in 2025 (January-April), up 384.5 percent from the same period last year, according to data monitored by China EV DataTracker.
