Borosil Renewables Announces 50 Percent Expansion in Solar Glass Production Capacity

Borosil Renewables announces a 50 precent increase in solar glass production capacity, expanding daily output from 1,000 to 1,500 tons. The expansion follows the introduction of a reference price for imports, supporting India's self-reliance and strengthening the domestic solar supply chain.

Borosil Renewables Ltd., India’s manufacturer of solar glass, has revealed plans to increase its solar glass production capacity by 50 percent. This significant move will enhance the company’s daily manufacturing capacity from 1,000 tonnes to 1,500 tonnes.

As per the firm's statement, the expansion, which was initially delayed, gained momentum following approval from the company’s Board of Directors on December 18, 2024. The approval follows a key development on December 4, 2024, when the Ministry of Finance announced a 'Reference Price' for imports of solar glass. The reference price, set at USD 673-677 for imports from China, acts as a minimum threshold for pricing, addressing the issue of cheap and dumped imports from China and Vietnam that had previously flooded the Indian market.

The dumping of low-cost solar glass from Chinese manufacturers had caused a crisis for the domestic industry, leading to a sharp drop in prices and threatening the viability of local production, said the firm in its statement. It further added that with the new reference price in place, Borosil Renewables is expected to see improved margins, enabling the company to expand its operations and return to profitability

The capacity expansion is set to support the growing demand for solar glass, a critical component used in the manufacturing of photovoltaic solar panels. The increased domestic production will help strengthen India’s supply chain for photovoltaic module manufacturers, ensuring a stable supply of solar glass and reducing reliance on imports.

Borosil highlighted that most of the raw materials, skilled labour, and technology needed for solar glass production are readily available within India. This will help conserve foreign exchange and generate local employment opportunities, making a significant contribution to the nation’s renewable energy goals.
