Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) has inked a pact with a renewable energy firm to install solar and wind energy plants in Neemuch during a program at Kushabhau Thakre International Convention Center. The MoU was signed by BMC Commissioner KVS Chowdhary in the presence of Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and dignitaries. The minister inaugurated a 21 MW solar project and a 15 MW wind project virtually.

As per the agreement, BMC will invest INR 28 crore in the INR 76 crore-solar project being set up at Neemuch. The rest of the amount would reportedly be borne by the firm. The solar plant is expected to produce electricity worth INR 367 crore every year.

On the other hand, the corporation will spend INR 30 crore on the wind energy plant. The total cost of the wind project would be around INR 100 crore.

The electricity generated by solar and wind plants will be available at INR 3.47 per unit and INR 4.24 per unit respectively.

While addressing the gathering at the event, Shivraj Singh Chouhan said that he wants Bhopal to become number one in terms of cleanliness. He quoted the example of Sanchi and revealed his plans to transform Bhopal into a solar city in a similar manner.

Sanchi, a world heritage site located in the Raisen district of Madhya Pradesh is being touted as India’s first solar city as it is fulfilling its power requirement through solar energy.

Meanwhile, around INR 176 crore is being spent to set up solar and wind energy projects in Bhopal’s Neemuch. It will help the city to save on electricity bills. With renewable energy, electricity will be available at a lower rate for 25 years and BMC will save INR 14 crore per year.
