Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) has announced that it has commissioned unit-1 of the 336 MW Chhukha Hydro Electric Project (HEP) by finishing the contract for renovation and modernization (R&M) of its generator.

With the commissioning of unit-1, BHEL has productively implemented the R&M contract for two units (unit-1 and unit-3). Unit-3 of the same project, built on the Chhukha River, Bhutan, was earlier commissioned by BHEL.

Bhutan Hydropower Company, Druk Green Power Corporation (DGPC), had employed the R&M order for Chhukha hydropower plant on BHEL for replacement of generator stator and rotor coils of unit-1 and unit-3. BHEL’s units at Bhopal and Bengaluru have provided the equipment and technical support for this R&M job.

BHEL has accomplished major projects such as Chhukha, Kurichu and Tala in Bhutan till date and is currently executing export orders for 1,200 megawatt (MW) Punatsangchhu-I, 1,020 MW Punatsangchhu-II, and 720 MW Mangdechhu projects, which once commissioned, would take BHEL’s share to 93 per cent of the total power generating capacity of Bhutan.
