International technology group Andritz has secured an order from Africa's leading renewable energy firm Mainstream Energy Solutions Ltd (MESL) for the modernization of another generating unit at the Jebba hydroelectric power plant on the Niger River.

Andritz has been active in the African hydropower market for more than 100 years.

This order was followed by a contract to modernize the first unit 2G6 received in January last year.

The company's scope of work includes supply and service comprised of the entire electro-mechanical and hydro-mechanical equipment for unit 2G5, including a 96.4 MW turbine, a 103 MVA generator and accessory equipment as well as the intake gate.

Andritz is expected to commission the second unit at the beginning of 2024.

Originally commissioned in 1985, the Jebba hydroelectric power plant is located in the North Central zone of Nigeria, about 100 km downstream of the Kainji hydroelectric power plant.

It is equipped with six 96.4 MW turbines and has a total generating capacity of 578.4 MW.

The objectives of the general rehabilitation program are to extend the equipment service life for the next 40 years, improve reliability, and ensure compliance of the frequency and voltage control with the national grid code.

Also, the new equipment is expected to repower the plant, boost the energy production of Nigeria, and provide much-needed energy to the people of the country.

Mainstream Energy Solutions Limited is a privately owned power generating company in Nigeria incorporated in 2011 and licensed to operate the Kainji and Jebba hydroelectric power plants through a concession agreement with the Federal Government of Nigeria.
