Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation, Amit Shah, chaired the 7th meeting of the Island Development Agency (IDA) in New Delhi. The high-level meeting focused on reviewing development progress in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Lakshadweep.

The meeting was attended by key officials, including Admiral (Retd.) D K Joshi, Lieutenant Governor of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands; Praful Patel, Administrator of Lakshadweep; Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan; and secretaries from several union ministries. Senior representatives from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands Administration, Lakshadweep Administration, and other central ministries also participated.

One of the major highlights of the meeting was the emphasis on renewable energy. Shah reiterated the government's commitment to achieving 100 percent renewable energy generation through solar panels and windmills in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Lakshadweep.

He also directed the Union Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) to expedite the implementation of the ‘PM Surya Ghar’ scheme, which involves installing solar panels in all households across the islands.

The move is expected to not only provide clean energy but also reduce dependence on costly diesel-based power generation, which has been the primary source of electricity in the islands.
