E-commerce giant Amazon has taken a significant step towards its sustainability goals by launching a last-mile fleet programme in India, featuring an all-electric vehicle (EV) lineup. In a bid to provide efficient and environmentally friendly delivery services, Amazon has introduced Mahindra Zor Grand three-wheeler EVs, specially designed for its last-mile operations.

The programme is set to support over 300 delivery service partners (DSPs) by offering them access to custom-designed EVs for last-mile deliveries, eliminating tailpipe emissions. In a statement, Amazon noted that this marks the debut of entirely custom-designed EVs in India, making it convenient for DSPs to access safe, high-quality zero-emission vehicles.

Not stopping at just delivering EVs, Amazon's initiative encompasses maintenance, charging infrastructure, and parking facilities. The company plans to expand the programme over the next two years, ultimately transitioning its entire last-mile van fleet in India to electric vehicles.

Amazon has already deployed over 6,000 EVs in more than 400 cities across India with the help of Mahindra Electric and other vehicle manufacturers. The company is on track to meet its goal of incorporating 10,000 EVs into its India fleet by 2025.

This move aligns with Amazon's global sustainability objectives, which include achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2040. The launch of the programme in India is particularly timely, coming just ahead of the busy Diwali season. As the initiative progresses, Amazon plans to add more electric three- and four-wheelers to the fleet.

Amazon's track record in implementing similar last-mile fleet programmes in North America and Europe has been notable. Abhinav Singh, VP of Operations at Amazon India, expressed satisfaction with the launch in India, highlighting that it enables their delivery service partners to decarbonize alongside Amazon, contributing to a cleaner, more sustainable future.
