The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a groundbreaking USD 200 million loan to enhance the power supply capacity in Uttarakhand, India.

This strategic initiative aims to fortify the quality, efficiency, and reliability of the region's energy infrastructure, in harmony with Uttarakhand's aspirations for uninterrupted power and a shift towards clean energy.

The project, centered on the modernization of Dehradun city's energy infrastructure, introduces a cutting-edge, climate-resilient underground cable system spanning 537 kilometers, incorporating 354 ring main units, and 99 compact substations.

The plan includes the upgrade of upstream substations and power lines, strategically addressing the surging demand for electricity, alleviating network congestion, and bolstering power distribution reliability in both urban and suburban areas.

In a collaborative effort, the Japan Fund for Prosperous and Resilient Asia and the Pacific, backed by the Government of Japan through ADB, will contribute a USD 2 million grant. This funding is specifically earmarked to support livelihood enhancement, training programs, and awareness-raising activities, integral components of the project's success.

Recognizing the pivotal role of capacity development, ADB will initiate leadership courses and project management programs tailored for the Power Transmission Corporation of Uttarakhand Limited and the Uttarakhand Power Corporation Limited.

In conjunction with the Energy Department, ADB is set to formulate an energy transition roadmap, aligning with Uttarakhand's steadfast commitment to a low-carbon future.
