The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has partnered with Kazakhstan Electricity Grid Operating Company (KEGOC) to advance the country's high-voltage transmission network with a significant USD 123 million financing deal. This investment aims to upgrade Kazakhstan's southern power grid, facilitating the integration of large-scale renewable energy sources and bolstering energy security.
The funding will be directed towards constructing 500 kV overhead transmission lines and refurbishing the Shu, Jambyl, and Shymkent 500 kV substations. These upgrades are anticipated to boost transmission capacity by 75 percent, enhance energy supply stability, minimise overloading, and reduce transmission losses.
"ADB’s collaboration with KEGOC supports Kazakhstan's net-zero emissions objectives and energy transition goals," stated Suzanne Gaboury, ADB Director General for Private Sector Operations. "The project will modernise the grid to accommodate renewable energy, decrease power transmission losses, and prevent economically damaging outages. Additionally, ADB will promote gender-inclusive workplace standards and support women in the energy sector through capacity building and technical guidance," said Gaboury.
KEGOC operates Kazakhstan’s Unified Energy System (UES) and plays a key role in developing the nation’s future energy system and market. It focuses on meeting economic demands and advancing a sustainable electricity system through infrastructure planning and clean energy initiatives. The Sovereign Wealth Fund, Samruk-Kazyna, is the principal shareholder of KEGOC.
Further, ADB is dedicated to fostering a prosperous, inclusive, resilient, and sustainable Asia and Pacific while striving to eliminate extreme poverty. It is owned by 68 member countries, including 49 from the region.
