Adani, Sprng, Mahindra, Avaada, Secure NHPC's 1200 MW Hybrid Projects

NHPC Ltd. has finalised the results of its auction for 1200 MW of interstate transmission system (ISTS)-connected wind-solar hybrid power projects..

The auction, which was initiated in December 2024, saw strong participation from leading renewable energy developers. Key players have emerged as winners, with Adani Renewable Energy Holding Twelve (Adani Green Energy) securing the largest share of the capacity, at 600 MW. Other successful bidders include Sprng Vayu Vidyut (Sprng Energy), which won 150 MW, Illuminate Hybren (Mahindra Susten) with 240 MW, and Avaada Energy, which secured 210 MW of the 600 MW that they quoted.

The competitive bidding process resulted in tariffs of INR 3.41 kWh for Adani, Sprng, and Illuminate, and INR 3.42 kWh for Avaada. Notably, the tender included a provision for an additional 1.2 GW greenshoe option, indicating the potential for further expansion.

A core requirement of the tender is that the projects must be hybrid, integrating both solar and wind power generation. Each component, whether solar or wind, must constitute at least 33 percent of the contracted capacity. This stipulation aims to leverage the complementary nature of these renewable energy sources, ensuring a more stable and reliable power supply.

Furthermore, the tender specifies that solar project locations can be anywhere within India, providing developers with flexibility in site selection. To maintain quality and reliability, only commercially established and operational technologies are permitted. This includes adherence to approved wind turbine and solar module models.
