Earlier this year, Adani Group received the project approval to set up two wind power plants in Mannar and Pooneryn areas of Sri Lanka. The country’s power and energy minister Kanchana Wijesekara has now announced that the wind power project would be completed by December next year.

The minister took to Twitter to share the development. "Progress of the 500 MW Renewable Energy Project in Mannar & Pooneryn was discussed with Anil Sardana, MD & CEO of Adani Transmission Ltd. & project management team," he said, adding, “We discussed the challenges, road map, and the timeline for the project completion and the commitment by Adani Green Energy to complete the project by December 2024"

Wijesekara recently met with the officials of Adani Group. The meeting happened to be the first review since February.

At an investment of around USD 500 million, the power plants of Mannar and Pooneryn are expected to operate at a capacity of 286 MW and 234 MW respectively.

In 2021, Adani Group inked a pact with Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) to develop Colombo port’s western container terminal. Gautam Adani, the chairman of Adani Group, met the then-president of Sri Lanka Gotabaya Rajapaksa to discuss the developments and investments in the country. A 10-member delegation with Adani travelled to Mannar on a Sri Lanka Airforce helicopter to inspect the wind energy farm.
