With an expected 60% growth in Asia’s energy demand by 2040, ASEAN Ministers have pledged that by 2025, 23% of energy in this region will come from renewables. At the "Asian Clean Energy Summit 2021 (ACES)" to be held at Marina Bay Sands Convention Centre in Singapore from 26 to 28 October 2021, Ministers from Indonesia, Philippines, Singapore and Cambodia will provide exclusive insights on their strategies to achieve this goal and investments to be made.
With the world recovering from the pandemic, the global economy has seen strong economic growth and deeper commitment for decarbonisation. 2020 saw a huge 280 gigawatts (GW) of renewable capacity, primarily wind and solar, installed globally, 45% higher than 2019, according to International Energy Agency (IEA). The trend is set to accelerate new technology innovation in renewables, hydrogen and carbon capture and storage (CCS) solutions, and escalate investments in clean energy.
According to Wood Mackenzie's 2020 forecast, Asia will attract US$1.5 trillion in clean energy investments till 2031 driven by a tripling of the region's GDP by 2040. Moreover, 45% of future global renewables and clean energy investments will be made in Asia (including ASEAN).
To meet these needs and ensure sustainable development, the region will need to develop clear policies, leverage new technology innovation in renewables, hydrogen and carbon capture and storage (CCS) solutions, and accelerate investments in clean energy.
Organised by SEAS and dmg events, the ACES 2021 conference and exhibition is the first post-COVID and pre-COP 26 trade opportunity for more than 3,000 regional energy leaders to meet 'live' and in-person to collaborate on critical issues and programs for harnessing clean energy and drive decarbonisation and clean energy transition agenda forward in Southeast Asia. Supported by leading government agencies, research institutes and the industry, ACES 2021 will feature energy ministerial keynotes, global CEO dialogues, and fireside chats by a slate of over 70 luminaries, including government ministers, utility leaders, Asia's top developers and financiers and leaders, who will reveal exclusive projects and investment insights at ACES 2021.
ACES 2021 will be opened with a keynote from H.E. Dr Tan See Leng, Minister for Manpower and Second Minister for Trade and Industry, Singapore, followed by Energy Ministerial Keynotes from H.E. Arifin Tasrif, Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Indonesia, H.E. Jesus Posadas, Senior Undersecretary, Department of Energy, the Philippines, and H.E. Ith Praing, Permanent Secretary of State, Ministry of Mines and Energy, Cambodia.
ACES 2021 shall focus on clean energy technologies and policies, with deep dives into topics such as hydrogen, RE100, carbon capture, solar innovations, electric vehicles (EV), and wind energy.
Prominent exhibitors include Sun Cable’s Australia-Asia PowerLink (AAPowerLink), a high-capacity solar, storage and transmission system worth in excess of US$ 22 billion, that will transmit large volumes of renewable electricity from the Barkly Region of the Northern Territory to Darwin and the Singapore markets, and one of the world’s largest renewable energy infrastructure projects.
"We are building a system that integrates solar, storage and High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) transmission technologies, to meet the large-scale demand for renewable energy. We want this world-leading project to create a step-change in the region’s capability to achieve net zero ambitions and economic growth sustained by renewable energy, in line with Singapore’s Green Plan 2030. Sun Cable is proud to be engaging with many of Singapore’s progressive companies, which have embraced sustainability, and we also look forward to continuing to work across Singapore, Indonesia and Australia to deliver this project,” said David Griffin, CEO of Sun Cable.
