In a significant move towards environmental sustainability, the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) in India has launched initiatives aimed at achieving carbon neutrality and net-zero carbon emissions at airports throughout the country. The key strategy involves standardizing the Carbon Accounting and Reporting framework for Indian airports.
The Minister of State in the Ministry of Civil Aviation, Gen. (Dr) V.K. Singh (Retd.), shared this information in a written reply during a session in the Rajya Sabha.
Under the guidance of MoCA, airport operators conducting scheduled operations have received directives to meticulously map the carbon emissions at their respective airports. The goal is to gradually work towards carbon neutrality and achieve net-zero emissions in a phased manner.
In addition, MoCA has extended its counsel to developers of upcoming Greenfield Airports and the relevant State Governments, urging them to actively pursue Carbon Neutrality and Net Zero practices, which notably include the adoption of green energy solutions.
This initiative has already yielded commendable results, with major airports such as Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, and Bengaluru attaining prestigious Level 4+ and higher Airports International Council (ACI) Accreditation, signifying their achievement of carbon neutrality. These airports have become examples of effective measures taken to reduce carbon footprints and contribute to a sustainable aviation industry.
Moreover, a total of 66 Indian airports have successfully transitioned to operating on 100 percent green energy, showcasing the nation's commitment to embracing eco-friendly practices in the aviation sector.
These measures underline the government's dedication to environmental stewardship and the proactive steps taken to ensure a more sustainable future for the aviation sector in India.
