UAE-based Enercap and South African renewable energy company Phelan Green Energy has entered into a strategic partnership to deploy a 1.5 GWh Supercap energy storage system.
This system, powered by Enercap’s advanced solid-state encapsulated capacitor technology, promises to revolutionise the efficiency of solar energy storage and distribution. The collaboration marks a significant step forward for Phelan Green Energy, enhancing its ability to deliver solar energy consistently throughout the day and night.
The Enercap system offers numerous advantages over traditional lithium-ion batteries, including superior energy density and faster charge times. Additionally, the system has a long lifespan, shows no signs of capacity degradation, and is considered safer and more environmentally sustainable. Its components are also recyclable and made from raw materials that are abundant and widely available, positioning the technology as a more sustainable alternative to existing battery technologies.
By incorporating Enercap’s Supercap system, Phelan Green Energy aims to provide 24-hour clean and reliable energy to its global clientele. This cutting-edge technology is set to optimise Phelan Green Energy’s existing renewable energy operations, which span various regions, including significant investments in green hydrogen production.
Phelan Green Energy Chairperson Paschal Phelan hailed the agreement as a major milestone for the company. "This partnership with Enercap is a vital step in boosting the efficiency and competitiveness of our renewable energy operations," Phelan said. He emphasised that the innovative technology will play a crucial role in advancing the company's ambitious green hydrogen projects in South Africa and Peru, valued at USD 2.4 billion.
These projects, which are ahead of schedule, aim to produce more than one million tons of carbon-free green ammonia. The process will involve converting desalinated water into green hydrogen using 100 percent solar energy. Phelan noted that the efficiency gains from the Enercap system will help accelerate these initiatives, allowing for the creation of sustainable and scalable energy solutions.
The collaboration between Phelan Green Energy and Enercap is expected to have a lasting impact on the renewable energy sector, as it enables more efficient and reliable energy storage, addressing one of the biggest challenges in renewable energy deployment—intermittency. The partnership aligns with global efforts to transition to cleaner energy sources and support sustainable economic growth.
