India is on the path to becoming a global leader in renewable energy. With the country aiming to achieve 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030, the sector is expanding rapidly, offering significant opportunities for job creation and economic development. However, gender inclusivity remains a key challenge in this growing industry. Despite their growing presence in various industries, women remain underrepresented in the renewable energy workforce. Addressing this gap is not just about equity but also about unlocking the industry's full potential. Greater gender diversity can bring fresh perspectives, innovation, and more inclusive decision-making, ultimately strengthening India’s clean energy transition.
Globally, women make up 32% of the renewable energy workforce. In India, this figure is currently at 11%, highlighting the scope for improvement. Studies indicate that if women’s participation in the energy sector increases to 30%, it could create up to 3.2 million additional jobs by 2025. Furthermore, India’s ongoing expansion of solar and wind energy capacity could generate approximately 3.4 million new jobs. Encouraging women to enter this workforce will enhance the sector’s overall development and impact.
Opportunities for women in renewable energy
While women’s presence in technical roles within renewable energy is still evolving, efforts are being made to bridge the gap. India leads the world in the number of STEM graduates, with a steadily growing number of women pursuing STEM courses, reflecting a positive shift toward greater gender diversity in technical fields. Expanding access to skill development programs and promoting gender-responsive hiring policies will help translate this potential into greater workforce participation.
Advancements in technology have also made the sector more accessible to women. Digital solutions, remote monitoring, and flexible work arrangements are creating new opportunities for women to contribute in technical and leadership roles. While women currently make up 27 per cent of the STEM workforce, there is significant potential for further growth and inclusion, according to World Bank data.
Initiatives supporting women in energy
Recognizing the potential of women in the renewable energy sector, both government and private organizations are taking proactive steps to improve gender representation. The Women’s Empowerment Scheme emphasizes skill development, particularly in STEM fields, to enable women to secure high-skilled jobs. Additionally, government subsidies for solar home systems installed by women are encouraging female-led energy entrepreneurship, providing financial independence and fostering innovation.
Private companies are also working towards diversity by implementing gender-responsive hiring policies and conducting gender-based workforce assessments. These measures aim to identify and address socio-economic factors that influence women’s participation. Programs such as Women in Energy (WE) are supporting mentorship, networking, and leadership development, further enabling women to excel in this industry.
Future outlook
The renewable energy sector offers tremendous opportunities for economic growth and sustainability. Increasing women’s participation will not only provide them with career opportunities but also contribute to a stronger, more diverse industry. With greater support from government policies, corporate initiatives, and skill development programs, more women are stepping into roles across the sector. Creating inclusive workplaces and providing leadership pathways will further strengthen this progress.
At the same time, collaboration between policymakers, businesses, and educational institutions is essential in making renewable energy more accessible to women. As these efforts continue, the sector will become more innovative and resilient. With sustained commitment, women will play a more significant role in shaping India’s clean energy future, making the industry more effective and inclusive for future generations.
