Data centers are the driving force behind the digital revolution, enabling advanced cloud solutions and AI-powered large language models (LLMs), with capacity projected to double to 1,645 MW by 2026. However, this rapid growth comes at a significant environmental cost. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), global data center energy consumption reached 460 terawatt-hours (TWh) in 2022, with projections to surpass 1,000 TWh by 2026—equivalent to Japan’s current electricity consumption. This surge presents a critical challenge: how can we scale sustainably without compromising innovation?

At Nxtra, we specialize in designing, building and operating the largest network of intelligent and sustainable data centers in India across 120+ locations, serving hundreds of customers covering Enterprises, Hyperscalers, Governments, SMEs, OTT, and CDN. All our new hyperscale data centers are designed to handle complex AI workloads through next-gen cooling technologies, scalable power infrastructure and high structural floor loading, thus providing hyperscalers and enterprises a future-ready infrastructure to implement AI and other next-gen applications. Along with our pursuit of building intelligent data centers, lies our commitment to sustainability.

Sustainability is not just an afterthought for us but deeply engrained in everything we do. With an ambition to reach net-zero by 2031, adopting innovative green energy, water and waste management, technologies are not just an afterthought for us but are integral to our data center designs and operations from day 1. We are integrating energy-efficient cooling systems and harnessing new-age renewable energy sources, including hydrogen ready fuel-cell technology to minimize our environmental footprint, being fully committed to meet the eco-conscious demands of today’s customers. AI-powered innovation and renewable energy play a huge role in this commitment.

Unlocking Energy Savings: Using AI for Data Center Efficiency
While the rise of AI-driven applications is contributing to increased energy demands, AI itself offers a solution to this challenge. Nxtra is at the forefront of building data centers that leverage AI and automation to drive efficiency, sustainability and operational excellence. We harness the power of real-time performance analytics and AI-driven technologies to optimize and enhance data center operations with a strong focus on energy efficiency. By detecting early signs of equipment issues, we prevent energy losses and optimize consumption, reducing our environmental impact. AI-driven fault detection and diagnostics algorithms enable predictive maintenance, improving equipment performance, while intelligent insights drive proactive decision-making and productivity. This approach sets new benchmarks for operational excellence, reinforcing our commitment to building a more sustainable and efficient infrastructure.

Renewable Energy: Powering a Sustainable Future for Nxtra Data Centers
In line with our commitment to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2031, we have a decarbonization road map, which prioritizes emission reduction through a combination of supply-side interventions, innovative technologies, and partnerships.

As the first data center company in India to join the RE100 initiative, Nxtra joined a league of leading companies committed to sourcing 100% renewable energy. We have invested in more than 100 companies in our efforts to source renewable energy. With an aim to utilize 70% renewable energy in our data centers by 2027, we are implementing a diverse mix of energy solutions like open-access renewable energy procurement, and captive power arrangements including rooftop solar panels.

In order to diversify our renewable energy sources and improve supply reliability, we are leveraging ISTS-based projects, which enables us to tap into a diverse set of renewable energy sources (solar, wind, hybrid projects) located in geographically advantageous areas. In an effort to be future-ready, we are the first data center company in India to deploy a low environmental impact, hydrogen-ready fuel cells as future-proof alternative to conventional energy solutions, thus enhancing energy efficiency while reducing dependence on fossil fuels.

Through these initiatives, Nxtra reinforces its dedication to sustainability, ensuring resilient operations while enabling customers to achieve their own environmental goals. The company’s efforts highlight its leadership in creating a greener, more sustainable digital future.
